The wilderness is wearisome, the wilderness is wild
Choices and the landscape there are stark
Delivered from distraction, and all that has beguiled
We hear the voice of verity there present in the dark
In the wilderness we apprehend the truth of what we need
And we come to reckon what at last is required
For wandering in the wilderness we don’t know where it leads
But it clarifies our dreams and our desires
You call us to the wilderness and sanctify that place
Where all our plans and schemes are stripped away
There we have nothing but the thorns and your sufficient grace
For in the wilderness your providence becomes the way
We come to realize what you save us from and save us to
And we find that in the nothingness all we really need is you
In the wilderness there are no trails that we can navigate
Unless we discern to look above and set our eye
Where morningstar and rising sun our directions indicate
And we shall see the unseen way the wilderness supplies
In the wilderness we’re tested in the wilderness we’re tried
To a place of judgment and humiliation we’re called
A place refuge from the world where we can escape to hide
And the shelter that we so desire is revealed once and for all
You call us to the wilderness and sanctify that place
Where all our plans and schemes are stripped away
There we have nothing but the thorns and your sufficient grace
For in the wilderness your providence becomes the way
We come to realize what you save us from and save us to
And we find that in the nothingness all we really need is you
