Undertow

 

Beneath the surface it lies

A clear and present danger

Hard to discern-  it belies

The truth that's ever stranger

It can take you under

Tear you asunder

What’s below you never know

There in the Undertow

Life has its temptations

And life promises much

Ease comfort and pleasure

And mammon and such

They become like idols

Futility’s crutch

They will take you under

Keep you out of touch.

Things are not as they seem

They are rarely discerned

We live in the shallows

Forget what we’ve learned

We make our delusions

We sleep in the light

We buy the illusion

That everything’s right
