In Their Own Eyes

The ancient walls were breaking down,

A wandering dust settles without a sound

The elders sleep, the Book is closed,

The highway splits into a hundred roads.

The traveler takes his trusty blade,

And relies on a choice that he has made.

And everyone did what was right in their own eyes,

Beneath the wide, unmoving skies.

Beyond the pale, a divergent line,

You take your path, and I'll take mine.

The miller keeps a crooked scale,

The preacher tells a heretical tale.

For what is sown soon must be reaped

A season that drives men to weep

They ask no leave, they pay no toll,

Each man the captain of his soul.

And everyone did what was right in their own eyes,

Beneath the wide, unmoving skies.

Beyond the pale, a divergent line,

You take your path, and I'll take mine.

The river rages without a shore,

The King sits at the gate no more.

With broken cisterns, fetid wells

Who is left the truth to tell?

No absolutes, no morals known

The old, familiar guide is gone.

Just a lonesome wind that sighs,

Right before their very eyes.

Inevitably true truth dies

And everyone did what was right in their own eyes,

Beneath the wide, unmoving skies.

Beyond the pale, a divergent line,

You take your path, and I'll take mine.
